Hi, welcome to Gwent Table Tennis Association's new website. These are exciting times for table tennis in Gwent, our County Cadet and Junior players have already achieved considerable success this season, the Gwent Closed took place after several years absence, and the Gwent "Committee" are looking at running a league next summer. This site will keep you updated on the sport we all love in our area, so save it to your favourites file for easy access. Cadet & Junior County Championships 2010-2011 Season Report

The final set of matches in Division 2 B junior took place in Okehampton on Saturday 2nd April 2011.

Our depleted team beat Devon 4 7/3, beat Devon 3 6/4 and lost to Devon 2 4/6.  Both girls Laura Price and Laura Edwards won all their matches, Max Russell playing at No 1 lost all his games, Alex Williams at No 2 won 2 and Bradley Trigg at No 3 won 3.

In the absence of our 5 top registered boys this was a reasonable performance.

Over the season our Junior team finished third behind Glamorgan (who were champions and promoted) and to Devon 2nd.

Team finished 3^rd behind the Sussex teams.

 

With our top players available we would certainly have won both Junior and Cadet Divisions. The outstanding performances were undoubtedly our four girls who were all undefeated.

 

Newport Open Table Tennis Championships 2011

Gwent players were proinant in the Newport Junior Open Tournament on the 20th March 2011.

Charlotte Cary (North Gwent) won the cadet singles event with laura Edwards (North Gent) 2nd and Beth Roberts (Ael-y-Bryn) 3rd making it a clean sweep for the medals. Laura Edwards went on to win the Under 13 competition. Charlotte Carey beat fellow Gwent player Beth Roberts in the semi final of the junior Girls event, Laura price (North Gwent) lost to Nicole Hall in the other semi final. Charlotte beat Nicole in the final to become 2011 champion.

Other Gwent players at the tournament were Ryan Oliver (Newport) Ryan Lo (Newbridge) and Myles Battle (Ebbw Vale).

County Championships 2010-2011

 

 

 

Following the success at Trowbridge on 14^th October 2010 when Gwent beat Gloucestershire 8-2 and Wiltshire 10-0 a depleted team travelled to Cirencester on 26^th February 2011 to complete this seasons matches in Division 2.

Unfortunately the date clashed with Team Championship of Wales matches in Cardiff and Y Morfa which meant that Gwent County would be without the top 3 boys and the No 2 girl.

 The absence of Beth Roberts was not a problem since Charlotte Carey and Laura Edwards won all their matches comfortably.

However the absence of Lewis Williams, Alex O’Connell and Ashley Perry was more problematic in that the inexperienced Greg Jones (Tredegar) found himself playing in the unfamiliar role of No1, Alex Williams (Ponthir) at No2 newcomer Ryan Lo (Newbridge) at No3.

In a close encounter we won the opening match against Dorset 6-4 with the girls winning 2 events each and 1 win each for Alex and Ryan both beating the Dorset’s No3. It was a different story against both Sussex 2nds and Sussex 3rds where only the girls could manage to win. Both Alex and Ryan came close to snatching a draw from these matches taking at least one of their opponents close.

On the plus side it did give an opportunity for our younger players to gain experience at this level.

In the Team Championship of Wales matches Gwent Junior teams were successful in that Ael-y-Bryn won both Division 1 and Division 2, North Gwent were Runners up in Division 2 and Newport were runners up in Division 3.

Blaenau Gwent Tournament

 

 

 At the 18^th Blaenau Gwent Gran Prix Ranking Tournament at Abertillery on the 16^th January 2011 Gwent Players did particularly well.

The cadet girls was won by Charlotte Carey (Gwent) 2^nd was Beth Roberts (Gwent) 3^rd was Laura Edwards (Gwent) 4^th Caitlin Williams (Glamorgan) and 5^th Soffi Jenkins.

The cadet boys was won by Lewis Williams (Gwent) runner up Connor Edwards 3/2 12-10 11-9 4-11 7-11 11-2

The junior girls final was between Charlotte Carey (Gwent) and Anghared Phillips from North Wales. Anghared won 3/1 6-11 11-7 11-8 11-9

Beth Roberts Gwent) finished third in her group (won by Charlotte) so just failed to get through to the semi finals. In the same group Rachel Cuss (Gwent) finished 5^th in that group. In the other group won by Nicole Hall (Glamorgan) Laura Price (Gwent) finished 3^rd and Laura Edwards (Gwent) finished 4^th.

In the junior boys final Lewis Williams (Gwent) won again victorious over Connor Edwards (Glamorgan) 3/0 11-8 11-4 12-10.

Other Gwent players participating in the tournament were Max Russell (Abertillery), Ryan Oliver (Newport) and Crygg Oliver (Newport).

 

 

 

 

Gwent Closed Table Tennis Championships

 

 

 The first Gwent Closed in 6 years was held last Sunday. Despite the poor weather most of the competitors made the journey to Newport’s Velodrome to find Gwent's top player. The morning events were for junior players under 18 and veteran players over 40. In the junior events Charlotte Carey proved too strong for all the other juniors only dropping 1 end in the whole event, finally beating Beth Roberts in the final. The veterans event was won by Newport’s own Ray Goulding. Although Ray dropped ends in the group stage he upped his game in the semi final to win in straight sets. The final saw him face the top seed Tony Collins. In a see-saw game where Tony’s attacking game took the first end and Ray’s retrieving game  levelled the match at 1-1 then Tony took the 3^rd game only to see Ray level again Ray eventually won the final game 15-13 but only after having to come from 2 match points down. The winners then recieved  their medals from the Chairman of Gwent Mr Graham Brettell. The afternoon session was open to all ages and was a mixed sex event. This gave the girls the chance to show the boys what they can do and show them they did. In both semi finals it was men against girls with Charlotte Carey against Tony Collins and Ray Goulding against Clair Ford. Ray won his match in straight sets to reach his 2^nd final of the day and Charlotte managed to defeat Tony for the first time in her career to also reach her 2nd final of the day. Ray got off to a flying start winning the first 2 ends but Charlotte fought back to level the match 2-2 Ray then regrouped to take a 5-1 lead into the changeover. Charlotte then struck her best form to pull the game level at 7-7 and then to win the match 11-7 and take the title of Gwent closed Champion 2010.

Sucess for Gwent girls in Newport. Beth Roberts and Laura Edwards achieved a double for Gwent at the Newport Cadet Open. Beth winning the Under 15 Girls event and Laura winning the Under 13 Event, Laura came close to doing the double on her own winning one event and finishing runner up behind Beth in the other.

 

 

Colley Gwent County Table Tennis Juniors were in action in the county championships last weekend. The unavailability of 3 of our top junior boys enabled us to give an opportunity to some of the less experienced players.

 

Alex O’Connell playing in the No1 position for the first time in the Junior team did particularly well loosing only to the Glamorgan No1 who is ranked higher in Wales. 

 

Charlotte Carey back from representing Wales in the Commonwealth Games in India followed a very successful weekend winning both Cadet and Junior events in the Stockton on Tees Junior Open by winning all her games in the 3 matches played. 

 

Beth Roberts won both her games in the match against Somerset and Laura Price won both her games against Wiltshire but only 1 in the match against Glamorgan loosing to the Welsh No3 Nicole Hall.

 

 

 

Debutants Max Russell (North Gwent) and Bradley Trigg (Ael-Y-Bryn) played reasonably well in there first matches at this level and were not outclassed by the more experienced players in the other teams.

Colley Gwent TTA Closed Tournament

 

A Gwent closed tournament will be held on December 4th at Newport Velodrome. There will be a Junior, Senior and Veteran events either mixed or male and female depending on entry. For your entry form see your league or club secretary who will be able to provide one, else contact myself at john.evans@live.co.uk. The sucess of this event depends on the entry get your entry in now. Closing date for entries is 7th November 2010

 

 

County Championships

Colley Gwent Cadet team of Lewis Williams, Alex O’Connell, Alex Williams, Beth Roberts and Laura Edwards made a good start in Division 1c of the English TTA County Championships on 16 October2010 with wins against Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
